This Snæfellsnes Peninsula private tour from Grundarfjörður cruise port takes you to one of Iceland’s most extraordinary regions, often called “Iceland in Miniature.” When your cruise ship docks in Grundarfjörður, you are perfectly located to explore dramatic cliffs, lava fields, volcanic mountains, black sand beaches and the wild Atlantic coastline — all in one unforgettable journey.

Dominated by the mystical Snæfellsjökull glacier-volcano, the area has inspired travelers and storytellers for centuries. As we explore the peninsula, you will experience a rugged and diverse landscape shaped by volcanic forces and the North Atlantic Ocean.

Expect a day filled with spectacular scenery and multiple stops at some of the region’s most remarkable natural attractions, including Kirkjufell mountain, coastal cliffs and charming fishing villages. Snæfellsnes truly showcases the diversity of Icelandic nature. Along the way, your guide — also a professional photographer — will help you discover the best viewpoints and capture memorable photos of the peninsula’s dramatic landscapes.

This Snæfellsnes Peninsula private tour from cruise port is designed specifically for cruise ship passengers, with pickup directly at Grundarfjörður harbor. The itinerary and timing are adjusted to your ship’s schedule to ensure you can explore comfortably and return to your ship on time.

Your Tour Itinerary

Here are the details of your upcoming tour. Click on the names to read more about each attraction you’re going to visit with us. Please note that stops may vary depending on your cruise ship’s schedule.

Ytri tunga

Let’s start with the white sand beach, especially popular with photographers looking for charming models. Beautiful seals posing along the Ytri Tunga’s shore can easily be spotted in June and July, but who knows, you might be lucky any time of year. And there’s also the gorgeous backdrop of Snæfellsjökull glacier to admire for hours on end… It’ll work as an appetizer for the main dish of this trip!

Búðakirkja (Black Church)

Going South, we’ll step by an inconspicuous village of Búðir, to see its only attraction: a small black church known as Búðakirkja. The dramatic, surreal landscape of endless fields with one Búðakirkja looming on the horizon offers a truly unforgettable view.

Arnarstapi village & Miðgjá stone bridge

Closer and closer to the glacier, there’s a real masterpiece of nature in the form of a small Anastrapi village. It does look like an artwork of an excellent painter, with its basalt columns and cliffs surrounding one of Iceland’s most impressive natural harbors. We can also walk on a remarkable stone bridge, which will make you feel like literally stepping in another, magical world. Photo opportunities alert here! No worries, our guide-photographer is always ready for a shot.

Djúpalónssandur beach

The road Djúpalónssandur, a black rocky beach located on foot of the glacier, leads through lava fields covered with beautiful moss, providing yet another portion of marvelous views. Once a thriving fishing village, the bay stays uninhabited today, yet still bearing traces of Djúpalónssandur’s once prosperous times.

Snæfellsjökull area

Time for what you’ve been most waiting for! You’ll experience the glacier touch driving as close Snæfellsjökull as possible, depending on weather conditions. Here’s the landmark of the peninsula in all its glory, an over 1400 m high dormant volcano towering over the Snæfellsnes’ National Park. No words can describe its majestic beauty and probably no picture does it justice. It’s one view your eyes and soul can’t miss! There are a lot of intriguing stories connected to Snæfellsjökull, some of which picture it as one of the seven chakras of the world. Well, the magnetism of this place really is indeed undeniable.

Kirkjufell Mountain and Kirkjufellfoss waterfall

We’ll call it a day after reaching Iceland’s most recognizable landmark. Kirkjufell, the unique “Church Mountain”, owes its name to the distinctive, cylindrical shape which resembles a steeple. Kirkjufell, along with a picturesque waterfall overlooking it, is also one of the most photographed places in Iceland. Though most impressive under the midnight sun or northern lights, Kirkjufell always mesmerizes with the colors that change seasonally. To see them dancing around the dramatic mountain’s formation is a real treat, especially for the “Games of Thrones” fans, who could see Kirkjufell in the series season 7.
