The abundance of waterfalls on the Icelandic map can make you dizzy, so let’s stick to those most remarkable ones. Straight from your accommodation we’ll take you towards the breathtakingly beautiful Seljalandsfoss. This 60m high beauty remains among the best-known waterfalls in Iceland and seeing its majesty with your own eyes is really worth all the hype! Needless to say, the possibility to walk behind the cascades of water makes it a unique and unforgettable experience.
Back on the road, we will drive along Eyjafjallajökull, another superstar among Iceland’s natural wonders. The 1651 meter-high stratovolcano called “Island-mountain glacier” lying beneath Eyjafjalla Glacier is distinguished by the ice cap covering its peak. The area surrounding one of the most famous icelandic volcanoes still bears traces of the notorious Eyjafjallajökull’s 2010 eruption, which received high media coverage due to disruption it caused to european air traffic.
The Valley of Thor, indeed named after the Norse God of Thunder, is real treasure for all mythology and nature enthusiasts. Lush green moss, ferns and Birch forests crowned with impressive mountain ranges over the horizon… The emerald hue of thriving vegetation and the stunning, volcanic craters, named Magni and Módi after the sons of the mighty god, will leave you, well, thunderstruck! Thórsmörk offers a breathtaking view over the entire valley from one of the hills, which we’re going to hike. Make sure to pack a good pair of boots!
Thórsmörk offers a breathtaking view over the entire valley from one of the hills, which we’re going to hike – the impressive, 458-meter tall Valahnúkur mountain. A good 1,5 hour long trekking up one of its famous trails will make both your legs and eyes very satisfied and hungry for more exciting moments!
As the day draws to a close it’s time for the last spot on our Thórsmörk tour map. The otherworldly Stakkholtsgjá canyon we’re going to explore located on the South of the Icelandic Highlands is a massive challenge – literally! Around 2 km long and surrounded with 100 meters high, moss-covered walls, the canyon offers a very rewarding hiking trail (with a lovely waterfall hidden in a twisting gorge at its very end!) and one of the most dramatic landscapes in Iceland. Considering yourself an avid fan of HBO’s epic “Game of Thrones” series? Do not leave Stakkholtsgjá without as many pictures as possible – the location was featured in a few episodes of season 7 and 8!
Icelandic weather is unpredictable. Bring warm and waterproof clothes, gloves & hat. Hiking boots are strongly recommended.
