CONVOY ADVENTURE

5 DAYS | OFF-ROAD ICELAND GUIDED EXPERIENCE

This 4×4 Guided Convoy Adventure is designed for travelers who want to go beyond the usual routes and experience Iceland as it’s meant to be explored. It’s created for those with a genuine passion for exploration and off-road driving, who see the journey itself as part of the adventure. Driving together in capable 4×4 vehicles with a leading guide, we combine iconic famous scenery with remote tracks, hidden locations and off-road sections that most visitors never reach.

The journey blends powerful landscapes – volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, black sand beaches and canyons – with carefully chosen lunch stops in unique and unexpected places, from greenhouses and local favorites to grills by rivers, campfires and even meals inside lava formations. Each day balances adventure and comfort, ending at hand-picked accommodations and finishing the trip with pure relaxation in geothermal waters.

This is not a race – it’s a shared expedition: guided, social and immersive, where the road itself is part of the experience.

The entire adventure will be professionally documented with photos and videos throughout the journey. We’ll also use a drone whenever conditions allow, capturing epic moments and landscapes from above – perfect memories to take home and share.

Your Tour Itinerary

Day 1 — From Off-Road Trails to Hot Springs

Our journey begins with an off-road drive across Hellisheiði, where wide-open landscapes, volcanic terrain, and rugged tracks set the tone for the adventure ahead. It’s a quiet, powerful introduction to Iceland’s raw nature before we ease into the day’s highlights.

Next, we stop at Kerið Crater, a striking volcanic caldera with vivid red slopes and a serene lake at its heart — a perfect early photo stop and a chance to stretch our legs.

For lunch, we head to Friðheimar, where fresh, locally grown tomatoes take center stage. Dining inside the greenhouse is a uniquely Icelandic experience and a welcome break to recharge.

In the afternoon, the Earth truly comes alive at the Geysir geothermal area, where bubbling mud pots and erupting hot springs remind us just how dynamic this island is. A short drive brings us to the mighty Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls, thundering into a dramatic canyon.

To wind down the day, we soak in the warm waters of Laugarás Lagoon, surrounded by peaceful countryside – the perfect way to relax after a full day of exploration.

We end the evening at our accommodation Hótel Lækur, ready to rest, review the day’s memories, and prepare for the adventures still to come.

Day 2 — Into the Wild South Coast

Day two is all about going further off the beaten path. We push south in our 4×4 convoy, navigating rough tracks and remote landscapes as we reach Stígafoss, a wild waterfall rarely seen by casual travelers.

From there, we drive straight into the shadow of Gígjökull glacier, where ancient ice crashes down from the highlands and volcanic ash stains the frozen surface – a stark reminder of Iceland’s raw power.

Boots on, we take on the Valahnúkur hike, climbing above the land for wide, dramatic views over glaciers, mountains, and endless black sands. Wind, elevation, and scale make this a true adventure moment.

Lunch is earned. In a remote setting, we fire up a Grillex Basar or a campfire, grilling sausage and sharing a no-frills meal in the open wilderness – smoke, fire, and good company included.

The day finishes with a deep dive into Stakkholtsgjá canyon, following a winding river between towering canyon walls to reach a hidden waterfall far from any roads.

We end the day at Aurora Lodge Hotel, isolated, quiet, and perfectly placed for rest – and if conditions allow, a chance to hunt the northern lights after dark.

Day 3 — Ice Underfoot & Black Sand Horizons

Day three is a full-throttle mix of raw coastlines, ice, and off-road driving. We start at the wild and lesser-visited Landeyarfjara Black Beach, where crashing Atlantic waves meet endless volcanic sand – moody, powerful, and untamed.

From the coast, we head inland to the legendary Skógafoss, feeling the full force of one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls before gearing up for the day’s main challenge: a glacier hike. Crampons on, we step onto ancient ice, navigating crevasses and frozen ridges while surrounded by dramatic views – a true hands-on encounter with Iceland’s frozen giants.

After the ice, it’s time to refuel at Black Crust Pizzeria, a local favorite serving bold flavors that hit the spot after a demanding morning.

The afternoon takes us back to the coast at Reynisfjara Black Beach, famous for its basalt columns, roaring surf, and otherworldly atmosphere. From there, we shift gears and climb higher with a Reynisfjall off-road drive, tackling rugged tracks and earning sweeping views over the south coast and the Atlantic below.

We wrap up the day at Hotel Katla, where comfort meets isolation – the perfect base to recover, share stories, and rest up for whatever tomorrow brings.

Day 4 — Valleys, Waterfalls & the Hidden South

The day begins with a drive into Þakgil, a dramatic mountain valley carved by rivers and framed by steep canyon walls. Remote tracks lead us deep into this rugged landscape, where the scenery feels untouched and far removed from the main roads.

We break for lunch at Smiðjan Brugghús, a local favorite known for bold flavors and a relaxed atmosphere — a perfect pause before the afternoon unfolds.

Back on the road, we head to Kvernufoss, a beautiful waterfall hidden inside a narrow gorge, where a short walk brings us right beneath the falling water. From here, the classics follow: Seljalandsfoss, with its unique path behind the cascade, and Gljúfrabúi, concealed within a moss-covered canyon and reached by stepping through a shallow stream.

As the day winds down, we return to Frost & Fire Hotel in Hveragerði, where geothermal warmth, steaming rivers, and quiet surroundings offer the perfect way to relax and reset before the journey continues.

Day 5 — Fire Beneath the Surface & a Perfect Finish

Our final day takes us straight into Iceland’s volcanic heart. We begin by descending into a lava tunnel, walking through ancient underground passages formed by flowing magma – a rare chance to see what lies beneath the surface of this ever-changing island.

From there, we head off-road toward Kleifarvatn, following rough tracks through a stark geothermal landscape. Lunch is anything but ordinary: a grill set up inside a cave, where we cook and eat surrounded by raw volcanic rock – a truly unique and fitting farewell meal.

The journey continues to the steaming geothermal area of Seltún, where bubbling mud pools, hissing steam vents, and colorful mineral deposits create an almost surreal atmosphere. A short lava hike brings us even closer to the textures and contrasts of Iceland’s newest and oldest terrain.

To close the convoy in style, we slow things down at the Blue Lagoon, soaking in warm, mineral-rich waters – the perfect contrast to days spent on the road, on foot, and deep in nature.

In the evening, we return to Reykjavík, checking into a carefully selected hotel and wrapping up the journey where it began – with full memory cards, tired legs, and stories that will last far longer than the drive.

What cars will we be driving?

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is the gold standard for off-road performance. A true icon designed to conquer Iceland’s wildest terrain while still offering comfort on the road. With its legendary design, bold stance, and modern tech, the Rubicon trim takes everything that makes the Wrangler great and pushes it to new extremes.

Whether you’re heading deep into the Highlands or simply want the confidence of a 4×4 rental in Iceland for your road trip, the Rubicon delivers unmatched capability and style.

Do I Need Off-Road Driving Experience?

Not at all! You don’t need any prior off-road driving experience to join this tour. While we’ll be driving on rougher terrain, unpaved tracks, and Icelandic F-roads (where only 4×4 vehicles are permitted), you’ll always be accompanied by one of our experienced guides.

Before and during the drive, we’ll teach you the essentials of safe off-road travel, including:

– How to safely approach and cross rivers

– How to manoeuvre on gravel, uneven terrain, and in challenging conditions

– How to use key off-road vehicle features, such as differential locks, axle locks, and disconnecting the sway bar

– How to drive confidently as part of a group, including spacing, communication, and pace

– How to read the terrain ahead and choose the safest driving line

– Basic off-road driving etiquette and safety awareness specific to Iceland

You’ll never be left to figure things out on your own — your guide will be there to coach, assist, and support you throughout the experience. Whether it’s your first time behind the wheel of a 4×4 or you already have some experience, our priority is your safety, confidence, and enjoyment.

FAQ

What should I wear?

Dress for Icelandic conditions and changing weather. We recommend wearing warm, layered clothing and waterproof outerwear. A good insulated jacket, waterproof pants, and sturdy hiking boots are essential.

Bring a hat and gloves, even in summer, as weather in the highlands can change quickly. Sunglasses are useful on bright days, and we also suggest packing a small backpack with extra layers and personal essentials.

Comfort and practicality matter more than style — this is a true off-road adventure.
