Our 7-day summer itinerary is designed for travelers who want to experience the very best of Iceland at a relaxed and comfortable pace. Over a full week, we explore the South Coast, Golden Circle, hidden valleys, geothermal areas, charming towns, and remote highland landscapes—making the most of long daylight hours and vibrant summer scenery.
With endless light, flexible timing, and plenty of opportunities for spontaneous photo stops, this journey allows you to fully immerse yourself in Iceland’s nature without feeling rushed. Evenings are spent in carefully selected countryside hotels, surrounded by peaceful landscapes and fresh northern air.
Traveling with a private guide who is also a professional photographer, this week-long summer adventure offers the perfect balance of exploration, comfort, and beautifully captured memories.
Your guide picks you up in Reykjavík and the journey begins along Iceland’s legendary South Coast. We stop at two of the country’s most iconic waterfalls — Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, both around 60 meters tall and spectacular in the summer light. Expect lush green surroundings, powerful cascades, and rainbows forming in the mist on sunny days.
Next, we visit Reynisfjara, the famous black-sand beach known for its dramatic basalt columns and powerful Atlantic waves. From there, we continue east as the scenery becomes even more impressive — glaciers stretch across the horizon, rugged mountains rise sharply from the plains, and each kilometre reveals new photo opportunities.
By evening, we check into one of our favourite hotels in the south-east, surrounded by wide-open landscapes and peaceful countryside. With long summer daylight and soft evening light, there’s often time for a relaxed sunset walk or golden-hour photography before settling in for the night.
Typical accommodation:
Hótel Glacier Lagoon, Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon, Magma Hotel or similar.
After breakfast, we head to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Icebergs drift slowly across the shimmering water, seals often appear near the shore, and in summer the reflections and light create incredible photographic conditions. Just across the road, we visit Diamond Beach, where fragments of ice rest on black volcanic sand like scattered crystals—an absolute highlight for photographers.
From here, we continue into the heart of the Vatnajökull National Park for a guided glacier hike. Walking on ancient ice, you’ll discover deep crevasses, sculpted ridges, and striking formations shaped by centuries of movement and meltwater.
In the afternoon, we continue east to the dramatic Vestrahorn mountain. If conditions allow, we’ll time our visit for soft evening light, when the jagged peaks reflect across the black dunes and shallow shoreline. It’s one of the most atmospheric locations on the South Coast and a perfect way to end the day.
Typical accommodation:
Hótel Glacier Lagoon, Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon, Magma Hotel or similar.
Today is all about exploring the South Coast in more depth—discovering hidden corners, scenic viewpoints, and places many travelers simply pass by. After breakfast, we begin making our way west again, taking the slower and more scenic route.
One of our first stops is Dyrhólaey, a dramatic headland known for its sweeping coastline views, rugged cliffs, and iconic sea arch. In summer, the cliffs are alive with seabirds, the landscapes glow in vibrant greens, and the endless daylight creates perfect photography conditions.
From there, we continue through quieter parts of the South Coast, stopping wherever the landscape invites us—black-sand plains, rolling moss-covered lava fields, distant glaciers, and charming farmhouses set against dramatic backdrops. By midday, we arrive in the village of Vík, tucked beneath towering cliffs and surrounded by striking coastal scenery. We’ll pause here for lunch and some free time to explore, enjoy a coffee, or browse local shops.
The afternoon is yours to shape. With long summer daylight, we have flexibility to enjoy a relaxed pace or add a touch of adventure.
From here, you can choose:
• Horseback Riding on the Black Beach
Ride the iconic Icelandic horse along quiet coastal trails and black-sand beaches for a peaceful and scenic experience.
• ATV Adventure Through the Wild South
Venture into rugged terrain, cross small rivers, and explore remote stretches of volcanic landscape far from the main roads.
• Scenic Helicopter Flight over Skaftafell
Take to the skies for breathtaking views over glaciers, icefalls, and dramatic mountain ridges within Vatnajökull National Park — a truly unforgettable perspective.
• Katla Ice Cave Experience
Explore a natural ice cave beneath the mighty Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Unlike seasonal crystal caves, Katla is accessible year-round and offers striking ice formations, volcanic ash layers, and a raw, dramatic atmosphere — all with relatively moderate walking compared to other glacier caves.
• Icelandic Lava Show
Watch real molten lava being poured while learning about Iceland’s volcanic history in a comfortable indoor setting.
Typical accommodation:
Skálakot Manor, Hotel UMI, or similar.
Today is all about diving deeper into the South Coast—exploring hidden corners, scenic viewpoints, and places most travelers simply pass by. After breakfast, we begin making our way west again, taking a slower and more scenic route.
Our first stop is the charming seaside village of Vík, nestled beneath dramatic cliffs and surrounded by black sand beaches. We’ll pause here for lunch and some free time to explore, enjoy a coffee, or browse local shops.
Afterward, we head up to Dyrhólaey, a dramatic headland known for its sweeping coastline views, rugged cliffs, and iconic sea arch. In summer, this area comes alive with vibrant colors, seabirds, and beautiful light—perfect for photography.
We then leave the main roads behind and continue toward the spectacular valley of Þórsmörk, one of Iceland’s most beautiful and remote highland regions. Reaching Þórsmörk is an adventure in itself, involving river crossings and rugged mountain tracks in a specially equipped vehicle.
Surrounded by glaciers, rivers, and volcanic mountains, Þórsmörk offers incredible viewpoints, peaceful hiking trails, and endless photo opportunities. Depending on conditions and your preferences, we may enjoy a short walk to a scenic viewpoint or simply take in the landscapes from several stunning locations.
With long summer daylight, we have plenty of time to explore at a relaxed pace before returning in the evening—bringing one of Iceland’s most unforgettable natural areas into your journey.
Typical accommodation:
Skálakot Manor, Hotel UMI, or similar.
This day takes us into Iceland’s iconic Golden Circle.
We start at Geysir, home of bubbling geothermal springs and the active geyser Strokkur, which erupts every few minutes. Next, we visit the mighty Gullfoss, one of the country’s most powerful waterfalls — spectacular whether bathed in sunlight or wrapped in winter mist.
For lunch, we make a stop at the beloved Friðheimar greenhouse, where you’ll enjoy a warm meal surrounded by tomato plants growing under geothermal lighting. Their tomato soup and fresh bread are always a hit in winter.
The last highlight is Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for both its geological significance and its history as the birthplace of Iceland’s first parliament.
Typical accommodation:
Iceland Parliament Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton, The Edition, Hotel Borg
Today we explore the breathtaking Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in Miniature” thanks to the remarkable variety of landscapes found within a relatively small area.
Our journey follows a dramatic Atlantic coastline, passing charming fishing villages, rolling farmland, and expansive lava fields glowing in summer greens. One of the day’s highlights is the iconic Kirkjufell, Iceland’s most photographed mountain, rising sharply beside its picturesque waterfalls — a perfect summer postcard scene.
We continue to the coastal village of Arnarstapi, where we enjoy a scenic walk along basalt cliffs shaped by centuries of Atlantic waves. Sea arches, rock formations, nesting seabirds, and wide-open ocean views make this stretch especially beautiful during the long daylight hours.
As we travel further, the glacier-capped volcano Snæfellsjökull comes into view. Steeped in folklore and famously featured in Journey to the Center of the Earth, its presence adds a quiet sense of grandeur to the landscape. On clear summer days, the glacier stands out dramatically against the sky.
With black sand beaches, volcanic formations, wild coastal scenery, and ever-changing light, Snæfellsnes offers a little bit of everything — a perfect showcase of Iceland’s raw and varied beauty before we return to Reykjavík in the evening.
Accommodation:
Same hotel as the previous night.
Just outside Reykjavík lies the Reykjanes Peninsula — one of Iceland’s most raw and powerful regions, where volcanic landscapes meet the crashing Atlantic Ocean. Steaming lava fields, moss-covered craters, bubbling geothermal areas, and dramatic coastlines come together to create a landscape that feels wild and untouched.
Today you’ll walk across the Bridge Between Continents, standing between two tectonic plates, feel the earth’s energy at the boiling Gunnuhver hot springs, and continue on to the dramatic Valahnúkamöl cliffs, where massive waves crash against towering rock formations. You’ll also venture into a lava tunnel, revealing the hidden world beneath Iceland’s volcanic surface. As home to Iceland’s most recent volcanic activity, Reykjanes offers one of the most striking insights into the country’s powerful natural forces.
Despite being so close to the capital, the region feels rugged, remote, and vividly alive — a perfect final chapter of your Iceland adventure.
From here, we will either drop you off at Keflavík International Airport or back in Reykjavík, depending on your travel plans.
Icelandic weather is unpredictable. Bring warm and waterproof clothes, gloves & hat. Hiking boots are strongly recommended.
