Stretching from the greater Reykjavik in the west to the glacier lagoon in the east, The South Shore area is a paradise for travelers who love exploring every possible corner on foot. To start with a bang, we’ll arrive at your accommodation and take you on board our Super Jeep Defender, heading towards the first major attraction – the majestic Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Get ready to have your breath taken away by one of the most photographed features in all of Iceland! Also, make sure to have a decent breakfast in the morning as we’re in for some serious walking. Seljalandsfoss can be fully encircled by following a pathway that stretches around it, with rocks and cliffs hiding a wide cavern inviting you to explore its mysteries. Continuing north, after about a 10-minute stroll we’ll find a cave that hides another treasure, Gljufrabui. Let’s put on our waterproof clothes – there’s some “drizzle” waiting for us at the entrance. Smaller in size, but no less magnificent than other icelandic beauties, the waterfall will provide you yet another mystical experience of walking up its gorge. It’s an excellent spot to take a short break and admire the beauty of nature in peace.
Now we let our Defender take us to another powerful waterfall, Skógafoss. Here’s a real hero, not once and not twiced featured in popular motion pictures. No wonder – its astounding height and seemingly endless cascades of water make Skógafoss one of Iceland’s biggest players. The amount of spray produced by the running water paints a gorgeous rainbow on the sky whenever the sun peeks out from behind the clouds. If you ever seen “Vikings” then you’ll surely recognize Skógafoss as the first wonder spotted by Floki when he discovers Iceland. Trust us, so astounding are the views that you’ll feel like in a movie yourself!
Time for a little change of scenery. Moving towards Dyrhólaey promontory we’ll admire the impressive coastline and a wide, jaw-dropping landscape of the Katla glacier. Having reached the hill, the view from the cliffs will reveal the wild beauty of Reynisfjara Beach with its characteristic, black sand. We’ll then go down to see the impressive large basalt columns sitting on the shoreline in a close up. The local legend says they were once evil trolls, trying to pull ships from the ocean. The mighty sun eventually turned them into stones to stop this mischief.
Now, ladies and gentlemen it’s time to visit picturesque fishing village of Vik. No better place to recharge after a fun-filled day. However, if you’re still hungry for more adventures, listen closely to our guide when in the car – he’ll mention some hidden gems. There’s plenty of amazing places not included in the tour’s price that you can opt for.
Equally popular with visitors to Iceland as the famous Golden Circle, the South Coast is a real treat for all Icelandic culture lovers. The cinema fans will be especially delighted with the visit to Dyrhólaey they’ll surely recognize as featured in the famous “Game of Thrones” TV series. Time for the winter to come, ain’t it?
