We’ll start our tour calmly, to warm up before the temperature rises. Our guide will take you to his favourite spot – Kleifarvatn, the largest lake in the peninsula and one of the deepest in Iceland. To reach it, we’ll drive through picturesque lava fields and the surrounding mountains. Looking at this gorgeous lake it’s hard to imagine it was almost completely drained by the 2000’s earthquake. Luckily, Kleifarvatn recovered and the unfortunate calamity even inspired an Icelandic writer of crime fiction, Arnaldur Indriðason, to write a novel titled after the lake! Well such beauty definitely deserves being immortalized, not only through the pages of a book, but also on stunning photos our guide provides as part of the tour price.
Moving on, it’s time for a walk in the colorful geothermal area of Seltún. Do resist the temptation of jumping into bubbling, simmering mud pools we’ll go between, as they’re definitely not meant for beauty baths! Our next stop will be the Krýsuvíkurbjarg cliffs that invite thousands of birds in the summer, despite harsh, never-ending winds. It won’t discourage us either, as the impressive view of the black rock face dropping dramatically straight to the sea makes up for unfavorable weather conditions. Then off we go to the lovely town of Grindavik to fill up our energy tanks with arguably the best lobster soup you’ve ever tasted.
After lunch, with satisfied stomachs and power recharged, we’ll drive to see one of innumerable geological gems that Reykjanes hides. Sitting at the bottom of the cliff there’s Brimektill, a natural lava pool, carved by marine erosion. This beautiful phenomena is also part of the local troll legends, which say it was troll Oddný’s favourite place for a bath and… doing laundry. The landscape stretching around the pool mesmerizes with a deep blue ocean, golden sand and the lush green of Valahnúkamöl sea stacks. Not far from our observation point we’ll easily spot the oldest lighthouse in Iceland, Reykjanesviti, blinking at us flirtatiously from the tip of the peninsula.
Passing by another active geothermal area, the colorful field of Gunnuhver, boiling steam vents and fumaroles will accompany us on the way to Sandvík. Arriving at the beach we’ll be welcomed by incredible dunes and remarkable black sand painting enigmatic, unforgettable coastline panorama. Sandvík is best known as a home to the Bridge Between Continents, a small bridge spanning a fissure between Europe and North America. To stand above the tectonic plates and feel like being on two different continents at the same time – could you imagine a better grand finale of our trip? Needless to say, your travel album will be enriched by very original shots!
Fierce geothermal activity of this huge UNESCO geopark makes Reykjanes an irresistible destination for those seeking truly intense experiences. Do not hesitate to put it on your must-see list of places in Iceland and let us take you on a private tour you’ll never forget!
